Renuvion in NYC: Tightening for Mild Skin Laxity
By Dr. Itay Wiser, MD, PhD, Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at Mount Sinai Elmhurst Hospital. His practice specializes in the care of patients after major weight loss, with a surgical weight optimization program and insurance coordination. Medically reviewed September 2026.
Renuvion is a skin-tightening device that delivers helium plasma energy beneath the skin, heating the tissue under it so it contracts. It is used for mild laxity, most often alongside liposuction, on the neck, arms, abdomen and thighs. It does not remove excess skin. Dr. Itay Wiser offers Renuvion in NYC for the patients it suits and tells the others plainly that excision is their answer.

How Renuvion works
Through the same small access points used for liposuction, a thin probe delivers a cool helium plasma that heats the underside of the skin and the connective tissue beneath it for a fraction of a second, then cools. The heat causes immediate contraction and stimulates collagen remodeling over the following months. Because the energy is delivered under the skin, the surface is spared.
Renuvion for the neck
The neck and jawline are the most common Renuvion area. For mild to moderate laxity under the chin, often with a small fat pad, neck liposuction with Renuvion tightens the skin over the new contour without a neck-lift scar. For significant hanging skin or visible muscle bands, a neck lift is the appropriate treatment. The Renuvion neck tightening article covers candidacy in detail.
Renuvion with liposuction
Renuvion is rarely used alone. Liposuction removes fat and leaves skin that must shrink to the new contour; in mildly lax skin Renuvion improves that contraction. Typical pairings are neck lipo with Renuvion, arm lipo with Renuvion for early laxity, and abdominal or flank lipo with Renuvion after modest weight change.
Mild laxity only: when excision is the real answer
The test is simple. If the skin is slightly loose but does not fold, Renuvion can help. If you can pinch and lift a fold that hangs, or your skin has stretch marks and little spring, no energy device will produce a meaningful result, and a surgeon who promises one is selling a device. That describes most patients after a loss of 50 pounds or more; for them the treatment is skin removal, explained on the excess skin removal in NYC page and in the guide to body contouring after weight loss. Renuvion can still refine a small area after a lift, and Dr. Wiser uses it that way.
Results timeline
Some tightening is visible as swelling resolves over the first two to three weeks; the full effect develops over three to six months as collagen remodels. Results are modest by design: a smoother, firmer contour, not a lifted one.

Recovery
Recovery and cost
Recovery follows the liposuction it accompanies: a few days to a week off desk work, compression for several weeks, and final results at three to six months. Renuvion is usually considered cosmetic and paid for directly, priced by area and usually bundled with the liposuction. The practice gives a written estimate and offers financing. See liposuction in NYC for the base procedure.

Frequently asked questions about Renuvion
What is Renuvion?
A device that delivers helium plasma energy beneath the skin through a small access point, heating the tissue under the skin so it contracts. It is used for mild laxity, most often with liposuction, on the neck, arms, abdomen and thighs.
Does Renuvion work for the neck?
For mild to moderate laxity under the chin and along the jawline, yes, often combined with neck liposuction. For significant hanging skin or muscle bands, a neck lift is the appropriate treatment, and Dr. Wiser will say so.
Can Renuvion replace a tummy tuck or arm lift?
No. Renuvion tightens mild laxity; it does not remove excess skin. If you can lift a loose fold, excision is the treatment.
Is Renuvion FDA cleared?
Renuvion has FDA clearance for specific uses, including improving the appearance of lax skin in the neck and submental area and in combination with liposuction. Dr. Wiser uses it within those indications and discusses this at the consultation.
How long until I see results?
Some tightening is visible as swelling resolves over the first weeks; the full effect develops over three to six months as collagen remodels.
What is recovery like?
Similar to liposuction of the treated area: a few days to a week off desk work, compression for several weeks, and final results at three to six months.
Mild laxity, or more?
At the free virtual consultation Dr. Wiser assesses your skin and tells you whether Renuvion with liposuction will help, or whether excision is the honest answer. Compare results in the before-and-after gallery.
