Mommy Makeover in NYC: The Complete Guide
By Dr. Itay Wiser, MD, PhD, Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at Mount Sinai Elmhurst Hospital, fellowship-trained in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital. Medically reviewed September 2026.
A mommy makeover combines the procedures that address what pregnancy and breastfeeding changed, most often a tummy tuck with repair of separated abdominal muscles, a breast lift or augmentation, and liposuction, in one operation or two planned stages. It is your combination, not a fixed package. Dr. Itay Wiser plans mommy makeovers in NYC around two things at once: the safety of a combined operation, which he judges with the standards of hospital practice, and the reality of recovering with children at home.
Your body did something extraordinary. This guide is about planning the next chapter: what can be combined, when you are ready, what it costs, and how the first weeks actually go with a toddler in the house.

What is included in a mommy makeover
Think of it as a menu you build from, guided by what changed for you. Each component has its own detailed page; the cards below say what it does and who it is for.
Tummy tuck with muscle repair
Removes the loose skin left by pregnancy, stitches back together the abdominal muscles that separated to make room for the baby (diastasis recti), and reshapes the waist. This is the component most women name first. Details, patterns and recovery are on the tummy tuck with muscle repair page.
Breast lift, augmentation, or reduction
Breastfeeding fills and then empties the breast, which is why so many women are left with deflated, lower breasts. A breast lift (mastopexy) restores position; breast augmentation in NYC restores volume with implants or your own fat; a lift with implants does both. Women whose breasts stayed large and heavy may want a breast reduction instead.
Liposuction
Refines the flanks, hips and thighs alongside the tummy tuck, and can supply the fat for a natural breast augmentation. It removes fat where the skin is still elastic; it does not remove loose skin. See liposuction in NYC.
Optional additions
Some women add procedures for the arms or thighs, or a small cosmetic gynecologic procedure; these are discussed case by case at the consultation, and the guiding rule is that every addition must fit inside the safety limits below.
One surgery or staged: the safety criteria
Combining procedures means one anesthesia, one recovery and one coordinated result, and it is safe for the right patient. Dr. Wiser applies the same criteria he applies in hospital practice; they are stated here so you can see the reasoning.
- Body mass index in the safe range. Higher BMI raises wound-healing and clotting risk in a long operation; when it is above the range, staging or weight optimization comes first.
- Total operating time within a limit. Long operations raise the risk of blood clots and complications; the combination must fit inside the limit or be split.
- A clear health screening. Blood work, a review of medications and conditions, and no smoking or nicotine for at least a month before and after.
- Support at home for two weeks. A combined operation is only a good idea if the recovery it needs is realistic for your household.
When any of these is not met, staging into two operations several months apart is the responsible plan, and the mommy makeover cost guide explains how that changes the numbers. Preparation for either path starts with the surgical readiness program.
Am I ready? The readiness checklist
- Enough time since delivery for the abdominal wall and skin to settle; Dr. Wiser confirms the timing for you.
- Breastfeeding finished long enough for breast size and shape to stabilize.
- Weight stable for several months; if you are still losing, wait, and read body contouring after weight loss if the loss is large.
- Done having children, or at least not planning a pregnancy in the next few years: another pregnancy stretches the repair and the skin again, and the result may need revision.
- Two weeks of help arranged for the first stretch of recovery.
The article how long after pregnancy should you wait explains why each wait matters.
The separation nobody told you about: diastasis recti
Pregnancy stretches the two vertical abdominal muscles apart to make room for the baby, and in many women they do not fully come back together. A large study following first-time mothers found the separation in 60 percent at six weeks after birth and still in about a third at twelve months (Sperstad et al., 2016). You can check yourself: lying on your back with knees bent, lift your head slightly and press your fingers just above the navel; a gap of two finger-widths or more is a diastasis. Crunches cannot close it, because the muscles are not weak, they are apart. A tummy tuck repairs it by stitching the muscles back together, which is why the flatter abdomen after a mommy makeover is also a stronger one. The diastasis recti repair page covers the self-test, what exercise can and cannot do, and the insurance nuance.
Recovering with kids at home
Every recovery guide says rest. Parents ask a different question: who is doing bedtime. Here is the honest snapshot; the full week-by-week plan, with a checklist for partners, is in the recovery guide.
| Timeframe | You | The kids |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 3 | Sore, walking bent, drains if a tummy tuck; medication and a nerve block keep it manageable | Someone else does everything, including lifting |
| Week 1 | Moving more; showering; first follow-up | You can sit with them, read, supervise; no lifting |
| Weeks 2 to 3 | Standing straighter; desk work; short walks outside | School runs by car once off prescription medication; still no lifting a toddler |
| Weeks 4 to 6 | Most daily life back | Light lifting only; a toddler waits until Dr. Wiser clears you |
Typical ranges reported by the practice, not guarantees. Recovery timelines vary depending on the patient, the procedure and individual healing. Timelines are longer for combined operations than for a single procedure.

Cost and financing
A mommy makeover is priced by what is combined, whether it is done in one session or staged, and facility and anesthesia time. Combining procedures in one session usually costs less than the same procedures done separately, because anesthesia and facility fees are shared, but staging is sometimes the safer choice and the practice will say so. Some components may be covered by insurance in many cases, depending on your plan. We're here to make the process easier. Our team can help answer insurance questions, take care of the necessary paperwork, and discuss available financing options to help make your procedure more accessible. The practice gives a written, all-inclusive estimate at the consultation. Read the full mommy makeover pricing guide.

Frequently asked questions about mommy makeovers in NYC
What is included in a mommy makeover?
A mommy makeover is your combination of procedures that address what pregnancy and breastfeeding changed, most often a tummy tuck with muscle repair, a breast lift or augmentation (or a reduction), and liposuction. It is a plan built around your body, not a fixed package, and it can be done in one operation or in two planned stages.
Is it safe to have a tummy tuck and breast surgery at the same time?
For healthy patients within the safety criteria, yes: a body mass index in the safe range, total operating time within a limit, and a clear health screening. When any of those is not met, staging into two operations is the responsible choice. Dr. Wiser decides this at the consultation.
How long after having a baby can I get a mommy makeover?
Once your body has recovered from pregnancy, breastfeeding has finished long enough for your breasts to settle, and your weight has been stable for several months. Dr. Wiser confirms the right timing for you, because the surgery should treat the finished result of pregnancy, not a moving target.
How much does a mommy makeover cost in NYC?
The total depends on which procedures are combined, whether they are done in one session or staged, and facility and anesthesia time. The practice provides a written, all-inclusive estimate at the consultation and offers financing. The full pricing guide explains what moves the number.
Does insurance cover a mommy makeover?
Some parts of a mommy makeover may be covered in many cases, for example a breast reduction that meets your plan's criteria, removal of an overhanging apron, or a hernia repair. Coverage depends on your plan and your individual case. We're here to make the process easier. Our team can help answer insurance questions, take care of the necessary paperwork, and discuss available financing options to help make your procedure more accessible.
How do you recover from a mommy makeover with small kids at home?
Plan two weeks of help. Avoid heavy lifting, including lifting a toddler, until Dr. Wiser clears you; school runs and light housework usually return within a few weeks, and exercise after that. Recovery timelines vary depending on the patient, the procedure and individual healing. The recovery guide gives the week-by-week plan and a checklist for partners.
